With the national spotlight on them, the 10th-ranked Cardinals stole the show Wednesday night in Brenham.
Dominating eighth-ranked and unbeaten Blinn College from the opening serve, the Cardinals delivered a statement win. They took care of Blinn in 25-20, 25-15, 25-18 fashion.
The win improved first-year head coach Paty Figueiredo's squad to 10-2 overall – all 12 matches having resulted in 3-0 scores. The Cardinals are 2-0 in Region XIV Conference play.
Blinn saw its records slip to 16-1 and 1-1.
The Cardinals raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and bettered that in the second set with a 7-0 punch. The Cardinals played the role of the aggressor the entire match.
"I am very proud of the team and the focus they displayed, their aggressiveness and the sense of urgency with which they played," Figueiredo said. "Now we must keep the same focus as we head out west."
The Cardinals left immediately after the game for DFW airport to fly to Salt Lake City, UT. They are scheduled to participate Friday and Saturday in the Bruin Bash Invitational at Salt Lake City Community College.
Friday, the Cardinals play Snow at 10 a.m. and Utah State Eastern at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, they take on Southern Idaho at 12:30 p.m. and host Salt Lake at 5:30 p.m. (All times are Texas time.)
The Cardinals' next home game is Wednesday, Sept. 17 against Coastal Bend at 6 p.m.
