With 7:11 left in the game, things did not look good for the 15th-ranked Lady Cardinals. They trailed Tyler by nine, 51-42, in a Region XIV Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Gym.
The view was a lot better when Kynnedi Davis drilled a three-pointer with 18 seconds left to tie the score at 60-60. The game eventually went into overtime and the Lady Cardinals pulled out a 70-66 victory.
The win improved Coach Precious Ivy's squad to 16-3 on the year and 4-1 in conference. The Lady Cardinals are tied with Blinn atop of the conference standings but own a 56-52 win against Blinn. Tyler slipped to 11-9 and 3-2 marks.
The Lady Cardinals have two road games scheduled this week. Wednesday, they go to Paris for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. Saturday, they visit Lufkin to tangle with Angelina at 2 p.m.
Monica Marsh and Niylia Wilkins scored 16 points each to lead the Lady Cardinals. Marsh had five points in the first half, all from the free throw line, and Wilkins scored all her points in the second half.
J'yana Salton netted nine points for the Lady Cardinals, also all in the second half. Salton led the defensive effort down the stretch. She finished with five steals and four rebounds. Salton also had two assists, including a nifty half-court pass.
The Lady Cardinals were 20-of-27 from the free throw line. Marsh was 8-of-10.
Tyler led 27-26 at halftime.
