TVCC Takes Down Bossier Parish

Following a tough loss to San Jacinto Saturday, the Trinity Valley Cardinals returned to action with a dominating victory over Bossier Parish.

The Cardinals took care of business in a 101-74 victory at Cardinal Gym.

WIth 11:03 remaining in the first half, the Cardinals trailed by a score of 21-15.

TVCC coach Guy Furr said with starting point guard Hyron Edwards out with an injury, he knew it would be tough in the opening minutes.

"We were a little tight," Furr said. "We have had a lot of injuries with Hyron Edwards, our starting point guard and All-American out tonight. We had JaQuan Lightfoot who had been out so we knew we would be off to a shaky start tonight."

The Cardinals (15-4, 6-2) return to action Saturday as they travel to Paris to take on the Dragons. The tip is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

"We have a big road game coming up at Paris on Saturday," Furr said. "They are always good and we will give it our best shot."

Furr said he expects to see Edwards back in the lineup Saturday.

TVCC had a solid outing from sophomore Amaad Wainright with 23 points. He gave the Cardinals a four-point lead at 36-32 with a 3-pointer with 4:20 remaining in the opening half.

"Amaad is always solid for us," Furr said. "We also have a lot of guys who are talented. When we share the ball and run our offense, we are good. It is still early and the guys are having fun so we are going to be okay."

The Cardinals had 18 points from sophomore Josh Stamps. Ryan Preston had 14, Andres Ibarguen had 12, Brandon Holley had 11, Amanze Njoku-Ibe, Jaime Echenique and Lorenzo Phillips each had six.

Lightfoot wrapped up the scoring with three points for the Cardinals.

Bossier Parish (7-12, 3-5) was led in scoring by freshman Brandon Johnson with a game-high 26 points. Lasani Johnson had 15, Cameron Burkett had 12 and Timothy Collins had eight.

Furr said following a tough loss to San Jacinto, it was good to see the way the Cardinals shot the ball against Bossier Parish.

"San Jac has a good team and we felt like we had a chance to beat San Jac," Furr said. "We missed too many shots but we felt like we played well. It was good to get this one behind us."

Late in the second half, TVCC had an 81-54 lead as Wainright slammed home the ball off a steal from Echenique.

The Cardinals travel to Bossier City, Louisiana on Feb. 15 for the series finale.
