Russell joined the TVCC staff in January of 2026.
Prior to TVCC, Russell spent three years at West Texas A&M University as the Receivers Coach and Special Teams Coordinator. In the 2025 season Russell lead a receiving group that helped WT to be the 4th leading offense in the nation. Russell was able to help develop three receivers from the 2025 season that became all-conference: Zach Phipps, Trevin Edwards, and Drew Zamar. Zach Phipps was also selected for the "Newcomer of the Year" award in the Lone Star Conference.
While coaching the receivers at West Texas A&M University, throughout the three years, the Special Teams units were among some of the nations best. Statistically, the units were ranked 1st overall in the Lone Star Conference in multiple categories and also had nationally ranked stats in numerous categories such as net punt average, punt defense, kickoff touchbacks, and punt return average.
Russell spent four seasons at the University of Nebraska-Kearney where he worked with safeties, cornerbacks and outside receivers while also aiding the return game in special teams.
Before entering the college ranks Russell coached in high school at his alma mater, Traverse City West, on the Varsity level as an assistant coach and as a freshmen head coach after being a hurdler on the Central Michigan track and field team. Also prior to his time at UNK, Russell worked for the Legacy Football Organization in Detroit as a quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator for the 7v7 Legacy Football League.
