Traditional Tryout Instructions
Location
Dance tryouts take place in the Cardettes' dance room (Student Union Building ballroom).
Attire
Hopefuls should wear a sports bra (any color), black dance shorts, and flesh-toned jazz shoes or half-soles. Their hair should be securely-fastened, and they should wear performance makeup with red lipstick. Jewelry should be removed and tattoos should be covered.
PART 1: INTRODUCTIONS
Hopefuls will introduce themselves to the Cardette Coaches and the Cardette Officers. Hopefuls should prepare to speak on their personal and dance backgrounds, in front of the full tryout panel. Community service and leadership experience may also be discussed.
PART 2: DANCE TRYOUTS
Hopefuls will complete a warm-up, skills across-the-floor, and two dance combinations in the styles of jazz and pom. The jazz combination will include a short high-kick section.
Skills may include (but are not limited to) the following leaps and turns:
• Jeté variations
• A la secondé leap variations
• Pirouette variations
• A la secondé turn variations
All material is taught by the Cardette Coaches or Cardette Officers. No material needs to be prepared in advance by the hopefuls. However, hopefuls will have the opportunity to show any additional dance or acrobatic tricks they would like to demonstrate. Tryout judges are looking for future Cardettes with mature and high-energy movement qualities, and engaging showmanship and confidence.
PART 3: RESULTS
At the conclusion of tryouts, hopefuls will receive an envelope. They will be asked to open their envelope privately (hopefuls often choose to open it in their vehicle). Those who are invited to be Cardettes will return to the dance room, sign their Letter of Committment, and have a twenty- minute informational meeting before being dismissed.
Fast Pass Instructions
Congratulations on earning your TVCC Cardettes Fast Pass!
Hopefuls who receive a Cardette Fast Pass are able to bypass any live or virtual dancing for the coaching staff. This means that upon submission of the tryout application, the only remaining task for the hopeful is an interview with the coaching staff!
Next steps: Once your tryout application (linked above) has been received and reviewed by the coaching staff, they will then reach out to you to schedule an in-person interview and a campus walk. If the staff finds you to be a good fit with the Cardettes' vision of tradition, talent, and sisterhood, then you'll be offered a spot on the line. At this time you will be asked to sign your Letter of Commitment.
If you have any questions about the early signing process, you may reach out to the coaching staff at any time at
Cardettes@tvcc.edu.
Virtual Video Tryout Instructions
Virtual video submissions are accepted for the duration of a hopeful's senior year, up until the month of April.
Next steps: Once your tryout application (linked above) has been received and reviewed by the coaching staff, they will send out an email with specific instructions for your videos. Dance videos have no restrictions as to the style submitted. However, technical skills must also be demonstrated outside of the routine. These skills include leaps, turns, and dance acrobatics.
