For a second straight year, the Cardinals are headed to the semifinals of the Region 14 Women's Soccer Tournament.
And it took a little extra work to get there.
Regulation time was not enough. Overtime was not enough. Double overtime was note enough.
Penalty kicks. Yes, that was the ticket that sends the Cardinals to Lufkin to take on Angelina in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Cardinals outscored LSU-Eunice 4-2 in penalty kicks after the two had played to a scoreless draw over the course of 110 minutes Tuesday afternoon at The Pit.
The penalty kick decision moved the Cardinals, ranked ninth in the final NJCAA poll of the regular season, to 8-1-8 on the season.
Angelina (10-2-1) earned the right to host the Cardinals with a 3-1 win against Northeast Texas. The Cardinals were a 1-0 winner against Angelina in conference play.
Scoring for the Cardinals in the penalty kick phase of the match were Paola Gomez, Elena Sugimoto, Kate Garrett and Meriem Mihoubi, who had the goal to send the Cardinals onward.
Cardinal goalie Gio Brandao had a huge save on LSU-Eunice's second attempt. That, and the Bengals missing their third attempt made the difference.
Friday's match against Angelina will be the eighth time the Cardinals have played the Roadrunners in program history. Angelina leads the series 5-2, but the Cardinals have won the last two.
In Tuesday's other tournament action, Navarro blanked Texas Southmost, 4-0, and Blinn and Tyler played to a 1-1 with Tyler advancing 4-2 on penalty kicks. Navarro and Tyler will play in Friday's other semifinal.
