And now for something completely different.
The seventh-ranked Cardinals scored five runs in the final three innings to overcome upset-minded San Jacinto for a 5-4 non-conference softball win Wednesday afternoon at Drumgoole Field at Cain Park.
San Jacinto (9-15) cruised into the bottom of the sixth inning, putting the Cardinals in unchartered waters and staring at a 4-0 deficit. No problem.
The Cardinals posted three runs to give themselves a chance in their final at-bat. After Ella Lozano, who picked up the win pitching in relief of Georgia Tardiff, quieted San Jacinto in the top of the inning, the Cardinals went to work.
Paige Abrames singled to open the inning for the Cardinals. Taylor Bilderback reached on a fielder's choice, setting the stage for Allie Wainwright to again deliver. Wainwright laced a line-drive double to right-center field to score Bilderback and send the game to extra innings.
San Jacinto again went quietly against Lozano in the eighth. The Cardinals did not.
Sydney Murphy led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Lilah McLean. She wasn't there long. Kamryn Messick jumped on a 1-1 pitch with a single to center field to put the Cardinals into the win column.
The Cardinals had eight hits. San Jacinto had 13.
The win raised the Cardinals' season record to 22-2. They are now 18-0 at home.
The Cardinals are scheduled to play at home Friday, March 13 versus Western Texas. Doubleheader action begins at 1 p.m.
Also Wednesday, the Cardinals scored a 5-2 win versus No. 12 Odessa.
