SMASHING START: Cardinals 12-0 for first time

Write it down: the Cardinal softball team is off to the best start in program history.

The Cardinals smashed their way to 12-0 and 9-1 run-ruled wins Friday afternoon against Northeastern to push their record to 12-0. No Cardinal team in the history of the program has gotten off to a better start.

The Cardinals will attempt to keep their winning ways going with a pair of home doubleheaders later this week. Friday, they take on Seward at 2 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday, they host Western Nebraska for games at 1 and 3:30 p.m.

GAME 1

Cardinals 12, Northeastern 0

(5 innings)

The Cardinals used a seven-run second inning to bury Northeastern.

Scoring 12 runs on 12 hits, the Cardinals were led by Madalynn Mendoza, who went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs with a double and triple.

Lilah McLean and Kirsten Wilkinson also had two hits each. Wilkinson knocked in three runs.

Kenzie Hess drove in two runs.

Getting the win in the circle was Ella Lozana. She went three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four. Allie Wainwright finished the game and struck out two.

GAME 2

Cardinals 9, Northeastern 1

(6 innings)

The second game was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Alexis Ortis, Taylor Bilderback and Mendoza in the fifth inning.

Bilderback went 3-for-4 to lead a 15-hit Cardinal plate effort.

Paige Abrames and Ortiz also had multiple hits with two each. They were also the team leaders with a pair of runs batted in each.

Clarissa Valdez went the distance in the circle to pick up the win. She fanned six and surrendered two hits.
