When you attend a Cardinal softball game, you better quickly settle into your seat. You may not be there long.
The ninth-ranked Cardinals tend to end games early, as they did Wednesday afternoon at Drumgoole Field at Cain Park with a doubleheader sweep of Ranger College – both via the run rule.
In winning 12-1 and 15-0 in run-rule fashion, the Cardinals ran their season record to a perfect 10-0, which represents the second-best start to a season in program history. It was the seventh time to dispose of an opponent early this season.
The Cardinals are scheduled to be at home against Northeastern in a doubleheader Friday. With a pair of wins, it would move them atop the list for season starts, topping the 11-0 mark in last year's 50-win season. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m.
Ranger fell to 3-11 with the two losses.
Here's a recap of Wednesday's games:
GAME 1
Cardinals 12, Ranger 1
(5 innings)
Ranger scored a run on three hits in the top of the first inning. But that was the highlight of the game and doubleheader for the Rangers.
The Cardinals responded with two runs in their first at-bat, one more in the second and then nine in the third. It was over.
Kenzie Hess went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in a run, and Amilee Stapp was 3-for-3, including a three-run triple, to lead the Cardinals at the plate.
Also getting multiple hits were Allie Wainwright and Madalynn Mendoza.
The Cardinals had seven extra-base hits.
Makayla Castillo overcame a shaky start and gave the Cardinals three strong innings in the circle to pick up the win. She struck out three.
GAME 2
Cardinals 15, Ranger 0
(5 innings)
Think the 13 hits in the first game were impressive? It got better in Game 2 with the Cardinals pounding three different Ranger pitchers for 17 hits
Wainwright had another three-hit game – all doubles.
Paige Abrames and Taylor Bilderback each slammed a home run during the onslaught.
Kamryn Messick and Mendoza joined Wainwright with three-RBI performances.
Wainwright was also the winning pitcher, striking out three and allowing no hits in three innings in the circle.
NOTES -- For the day, the Cardinals scored 27 runs on 30 hits … The Cardinals are now 9-2 all-time against Ranger, the last five all having via the run rule … Cardinal head coach Maria Winn-Ratliff now has 866 career wins, 159 of which are at TVCC.
