8-0: No. 9 Cardinals off to perfect start

If your weekend was like the one the Cardinal softball team experienced, it was perfect.

The ninth-ranked Cardinals ran the season-starting record to 8-0 with four wins in four home games Saturday and Sunday at Drumgoole Field at Cain Park.

In a split doubleheader Saturday, the Cardinals took a 13-1 win against No. 14 Butler and a 7-1 decision against No. 18 Seminole State. Sunday, they swept Lamar State, winning 11-1 and 7-3.

The 8-0 start is the second-best in program history. Here are the top five:

2026 – 8-0

2016 – 7-0

2020 – 6-0

2024 – 6-0

The Cardinals are scheduled to be at home Wednesday in doubleheader action against Ranger, starting at 1 p.m. Friday, they are scheduled to host Northeastern. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m.

Here are brief recaps of this weekend's games:

Cardinals 13, Butler 1

(5 innings)

The Cardinals scored six runs in the second inning and seven more in the third to put away Butler in a five-inning, run-ruled contest.

Kenzie Hess and Allie Wainwright drove in four runs each for the Cardinals. Hess had a triple and Wainwright a home run.

Madalynn Mendoza went 3-for-3 at the plate.

Dominique Vargas went four innings in the circle to pick up the win. She struck out five.

Cardinals 7, Seminole State 1

Taylor Bilderback, Sydney Murphy and Wainwright had two hits each in a 10-hit Cardinal plate performance.

Clarissa Valdez, who had a home run, drove in three runs.

Makayla Castillo went the distance in the circle, fanning seven and giving up three hits.

Cardinals 11, Lamar State 1

(5 innings)

Bilderback and Mendoza combined to drive in five runs in a 12-hit Cardinal attack.

Mendoza had a home run and Kamry Messick, Wainwright, Mendoza and Bilderback each had a double. Bilderback also had a triple.

Vargas was the pitcher of record in four innings of work. She struck out four.

Cardinals 7, Lamar State 3

The Cardinals scored five runs in their final three at-bats to complete the twinbill sweep.

Hitting in the no. 9 position, Amilee Stapp had a home run for the Cardinals. She drove in three runs in the game.

Lilah McLean and Messick had multiple-hit games.
