ALONE AT THE TOP: Cardinals back in conference lead

ALONE AT THE TOP: Cardinals back in conference lead

When the Cardinals settle a score, they really settle a score.

Upset 64-57 by Blinn at Cardinal Gym back in January, the Cardinals took out a measure of getting even in big way Wednesday night in Brenham, pouring it on the second half on their way to an 80-58 blowout of the Buccaneers.

The win, coupled with an 86-83 Kilgore loss to Tyler, moved the Cardinals all alone into first place in Region XIV Conference with one game to go. Now 25-4 on the season, the Cardinals are 18-3 in conference and one game up on Kilgore.

The defending NJCAA champion Cardinals can claim an outright conference championship Saturday with a win at Lee in their regular season finale. The Cardinals were a 67-50 winner against Lee last week at Cardinal Gym. Kilgore plays Panola in its finale.

Armani Henderson, the NJCAA Player of the Week last week, scored 16 of his team-high 19 points, in the second half as the Cardinals pulled away after leading 35-31 at intermission. Henderson also had eight assists and three of the Cardinals' nine three-pointers.

Zati Loubaki, hitting 7-of-10 shots, had 16 points and Derelle Desire 13.

M.J. Wardlow and Braylon Wenger netted nine each.

The regional tournament is scheduled March 10-14 at Lee College in Baytown. The Cardinals will be the No. 1 seed.
