The Region XIV Conference champion and fifth-ranked Cardinals put on a show Wednesday night at Cardinal Gym.
Wendell Mitchell and Lorenzo Phillips joined forces for 52 points to lead the Cardinals in a 101-84 rout of Tyler in front of a large and appreciative crowd. Mitchell led the way with 27 points, but Phillips stole the show with 25 and seven three-pointers of the long-range variety.
The Cardinals (26-3, 17-1) had 14 three-pointers in completing a regular season sweep of Tyler. In the first meeting at Wagstaff Gym, the Cardinals were a 90-83 winner in overtime.
The Cardinals raced out to a 15-5 lead before Tyler made things close over a four-minute stretch. But once Phillips began his barrage from beyond the arc, it was over. The Cardinals were up 41-31 at the half and 74-58 midway through the second half.
The Cardinals, who have now won or shared conference titles four of the last five seasons, are scheduled to close the regular season on the road Saturday at Kilgore. Game time is 4 p.m. after a 2 p.m. women's contest.
The Cardinals will be the No. 1 seed in the regional tournament March 6-10 at Jacksonville. Their first game is set for 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 8.
