TVCC Cardinals beat Blinn in Region XIV Conference Play

The hot start for the TVCC Cardinals continued Wednesday with an 82-70 victory over the Blinn Buccaneers at Cardinal Gym.

This was the only meeting between the two teams during the regular season.

The win improved first-year head coach Guy Furr's Cardinals to 14-3 on the year and 5-1 in league play. Blinn dropped to 9-5 and 3-2.

The Cardinals have won 38 of their last 39 conference games.

Trinity Valley returns to action Saturday as they travel to Pasadena, Texas to face No. 5-ranked and undefeated San Jacinto.

The Ravens are 15-0 after beating Tyler Junior College, 74-66, in conference play Wednesday.

Following the road trip Saturday, the Cardinals return home Wednesday, Jan. 18 as they host the Bossier Parish Cavaliers in the first of two meetings this season.

The tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Leon Spencer Court at Cardinal Gym.

In the victory over Blinn, TVCC was led by Jaime Echenique and Josh Stamps with 12 points each.

Hyron Edwards and Andres Ibarguen had 11 each and sophomore Ryan Preston had 10 to round out the double figure scoring.

Brandon Holley had eight, Julius Jackson had seven, Amaad Wainright had six, Lorenzo Phillips had three and Yildon Mendoza had two points.

Blinn was led by Antione Lister with a game-high 16 points.

Lakendric Hyson had 14 and Kobe Wrice had 11 for the Buccaneers.

In the victory over Blinn, the Cardinals only trailed during the opening minutes as Tyrus Grayson scored the opening basket for the Buccaneers.

Following that basket, Edwards gave the Cardinals the lead with a 3-pointer and they never looked back.

TVCC jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the opening six minutes of the game as Ryan Preston scored on a rebound jumper.

Blinn got to within, 19-18, with strong play on the inside, but the Cardinals got the lead back up to four with 7:25 remaining in the opening half.

Edwards found Preston on the perfect pass as Preston dunked the ball for the 27-21 lead.

The Cardinals then got the lead up to nine as Stamps found Ibarguen for the 3-point play with 6:50 remaining in the opening half.

With 2:18 remaining to halftime, the Cardinals extended the lead to double digits as Preston had another rebound basket for the 40-29 lead.

In the second half of play, the Cardinals held a 51-35 lead with 17:19 remaining.

On the basket, Wainright found Stamps for a dunk, which forced Blinn coach Scott Shumacher to call a timeout.

Less than four minutes later, Schumacher was forced to call another timeout as Wainright drained a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals a 58-40 lead.

With less than eight minutes remaining in regulation, Stamps added another basket on a rebound attempt to give the Cardinals a 72-55 lead.
