The 2016 football season saw the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals notch a fourth straight Southwest Junior College Football Conference championship. It also saw them add entries to the NJCAA Record Book.
Coach Brad Smiley's Cardinals, now holders of six national records, set the NJCAA mark for total plays with 944 (472 rushing, 472 passing), which topped the Cardinals' previous national mark of 938 from the 2014 season.
Also, defensive back Devante Thomas established a national record for average per interception return. He averaged 44.0 on five interceptions, which better the previous mark of 42.6.
The Cardinals went 11-1 on the season and were 6-0 in SWJCFC action. They also captured their third regional title in four seasons and were a 34-24 winner against defending NJCAA champion Northwestern Mississippi in the C.H.A.M.P.S Heart of Texas Bowl.
The Cardinals were No. 4 in the final NJCAA poll.
