IT'S GO TIME: Wharton first up for Lady Cardinals

The Lady Cardinals head south Wednesday to open the eighth season in school history.

Coach Tosha Spain's squad is scheduled to take on Wharton County Junior College. Action begins at 5 p.m.

Spain, the only coach in Lady Cardinal history, has compiled a 133-108 record, including last year's 23-8 mark – the eight losses a school record for fewest losses in a season.

The 2016 campaign also represented the most dominant season. Of their 23 wins, 18 were by 3-0 scores. In qualifying for the regional tournament for the fourth time in five  years, the Lady Cardinals had a pair of seven-game win streaks.

Sophomores Kirsten Boatman, Melissa Bento, Diana Giordani, Alexis Jo Houston, Hailey Curl and CeTara Carter and redshirt freshman Allicia Bauersfeld return from last year's squad. Bolstering the experience level for the Lady Cardinals will be Sul Ross State University transfer Kayla LaRue.

"I am very excited about the group of kids I have returning," Spain said. "They were part of a very special team last year and understand the commitment it takes to be successful.

"I like a lot of what I've seen from this team in our workouts and scrimmages."

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to be on the road again this weekend in tournament action in Vernon. They stay on the road next week, going to Temple on Tuesday and to the San Jacinto tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The home opener for the Lady Cardinals is Monday, Sept. 11, vs. Temple at 5:30 p.m.

Conference action begins on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Tyler. Game time is 7 p.m.
