STAYING ALIVE: Cardinals split twinbill with NE Texas

STAYING ALIVE: Cardinals split twinbill with NE Texas

Four teams remain alive for the final two Region XIV Tournament berths in the East Zone after Wednesday's action. The Cardinals, Northeast Texas, Tyler and Navarro will all go to the final day of the regular season Friday looking to claim tickets to Bossier City, La., site of the tournament May 13-16.

The Cardinals and Northeast Texas split a doubleheader at Drumgoole Field at Cain Park. Northeast Texas was a 7-6 winner in the first game and the Cardinals came back to take an 8-0 five-inning win in the second. Tyler did not play.

Northeast Texas is currently in third place with a 12-11 record. The Cardinals are 11-11 and Tyler 11-12. Navarro is 9-13.

Bossier Parish and Paris have already secured the top two seeds in the East Zone. Both have completed conference play.

The Cardinals are scheduled to be at home Friday against Navarro (26-22, 9-13) in doubleheader action starting at 1 p.m.  The Cardinals, who have the head-to-head tiebreaker against Tyler, need a single win to secure a tournament berth. With a sweep of Navarro, and a Northeast Texas loss to Tyler in a single game Friday, the Cardinals would claim the East Zone's No. 3 seed in the regional tournament.

The Cardinals and Navarro split a previous doubleheader in Corsicana. Navarro won the first game, 8-7, and the Cardinals the second, 10-0.

Northeast Texas and Tyler are scheduled to play a single game in Tyler at noon. A Tyler loss would give the Cardinals a tournament berth.

Navarro, which was swept Wednesday, by Paris can qualify for the postseason with a sweep of the Cardinals and a Tyler loss.

In the event of a three-way tie for the final two tournament berths, which would occur if Tyler beats Northeast Texas and the Cardinals split with Navarro, the Cardinals would be in good shape, owning wins over both Bossier Parish and Paris.

Here's a recap of Wednesday's doubleheader:

GAME 1

Northeast Texas 7, Cardinals 6

Northeast Texas scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to pull out the win.

The Cardinals led 4-1 after one inning.

Halle Post, Rawnie Weststrate, Kaitlyn Corn and Abigail Garcia led an 11-hit plate performance for the Cardinals with two hits each. Corn had two doubles and drove in a pair of runs. Post also had two RBI.

Nicole Stuhr absorbed the loss in the circle. She went four innings and was followed by Weststrate. The two combined to strike out five.

GAME 2

Cardinals 8, Northeast Texas 0

Alessandra Borjas threw a one-hitter and got all the run support she needed as the Cardinals took care of business in the nightcap.

Borjas struck out five.

The Cardinals had a 10-hit plate effort, led by Karlie Cook, Emily Alvarez, Post and Corn with two each. Corn had a double, giving her three on the day.

Hannah Pacheco and Weststrate drove in two runs each.

The Cardinals scored all the runs they would need behind Borjas' pitching with two in the first. They added two more in the second and capped the win with four in the fourth.
