Region XIV Conference-leading Bossier Parish Community College had to work to salvage a doubleheader split Wednesday afternoon (and night) against the Cardinals at Drumgoole Field at Cain Park.
The Cardinals surprised Cavaliers in the first game, winning 3-2. In the second, which started a little after 6 p.m. and finished around 9:10 p.m. (including a power outage delay of approximately 15 minutes), Bossier Parish escaped with a 5-4 win in 10 innings.
With the split, the Cardinals improved to 26-22 on the season and 7-7 in conference. Bossier Parish dropped to 32-12 and 13-3.
Bossier Parish defeated the Cardinals 8-0 and 7-1 in doubleheader last month.
The Cardinals are scheduled to be at home again Saturday against Paris (29-11, 13-3). Doubleheader action is set to begin at 1 p.m.
GAME 1
Cardinals 3, Bossier Parish 2
The Cardinals made the most of four hits and an error-free defensive effort in the win.
The Cardinals scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 tie and made it stand up. The Cardinals led 2-0 after the first inning.
Emily Alvarez, Hannah Pacheco (double), Kaitlyn Corn and Yasmine Derbal (double) each had a hit for the Cardinals. Corn drove in two runs.
In the circle, Ronnie Weststrate when five and-two-third innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. She struck out five. Nicole Stuhr finished the game.
GAME 2
Bossier Parish 5, Cardinals 4
In the marathon nightcap, Bossier Parish scored a run in the top of the 10th and then held the Cardinals at bay.
The score was tied 2-2 after seven innings.
Karlie Cook went 3-for-5 to lead a 12-hit Cardinal attack.
Halle Post, Corn and Pacheco had two hits each. Corn had a double.
Alessandra Borjas turned in five and-a-third innings in the circle. She struck out six before giving way to Stuhr and Weststrate. Between the three, there were 10 Bossier Parish strikeouts.
The Cardinals were also errorless in the game, giving them 17 such innings for the doubleheader.
