After a heartbreaking 7-6 loss in the first game of a Region XIV Conference softball doubleheader Monday afternoon at Northeast Texas Community College, the Cardinals came back to nab a 6-4 win in the second.
The split moved the Cardinals to 25-21 on the season and 6-6 in conference. Northeast Texas saw its records go to 17-17 and 7-9.
The Cardinals, who are 8-2 in their last 10 games, are scheduled to be at home Wednesday in doubleheader action against Bossier Parish. Action at Drumgoole Field at Cain Park is set to start at 3 p.m.
Coach Maria Winn-Ratliff's squad is also scheduled to be at home Saturday against Paris. Doubleheader action begins at 1 p.m.
GAME 2
TVCC 6, Northeast Texas 4
The Cardinals scored three runs in the sixth inning to take command of the scoreboard and held on for the win.
Kaitlyn Corn, Yasmine Derbal and Halle Post led a nine-hit Cardinal performance at the plate with two hits each. Post scored a pair of runs.
Alessandra Borjas was the winning pitcher. She worked five innings, striking out three, before being relieved by Ronnie Weststrate.
The Cardinals were almost flawless defensively, committing just one error.
GAME 1
Northeast Texas 7, TVCC 6
Northeast Texas scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with a win.
The Cardinals spotted Northeast Texas a 4-1 lead after one inning before battling back and moving on top 6-5 after the fifth.
Emily Alvarez went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Cardinals. She had a double and scored two runs.
Rosemary Rivera had the big blast for the Cardinals with a three-run homer.
Pitching in relief of Weststrate, Nicole Stuhr absorbed the loss. She gave up three runs on five hits and struck out one in six and-two-third innings.
The Cardinals were charged with one error.
