9-20-18: Sports Notes

VOLLEYBALL

The seventh-ranked Lady Cardinals picked off another Top 10 team Wednesday night, sweeping ninth-ranked Tyler in 3-0 fashion (25-18, 26-24, 25-21) Wednesday night at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

The win improved ninth-year head coach Tosha Spain's squad to 15-1 overall. The Lady Cardinals are 2-1 in conference play with all three games having been on the road. The three remaining conference games are all at home in October at new-look Cardinal Gym.

The Lady Cardinals now own a three-game winning streak against Tyler, which finished fourth at the national tournament last year. The Lady Cardinals swept Tyler last season and will attempt a like fete when the Apache Ladies come to Athens on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The Lady Cardinals were scheduled to host Ranger in a non-conference match Friday at the Athens High School sports arena, but it has been canceled. It may be rescheduled at a later date, according to Spain.

Navarro – 3-0

TVCC – 2-1

Panola – 1-2

Tyler – 0-3

All three matches are scheduled to be webcast on the Cardinal Sports Network.

FOOTBALL

The Cardinals return to Bruce Field to take on the sixth-ranked Blinn College Buccaneers this week. Game time Saturday is 7 p.m.

The Cardinals, 1-3 overall and 1-2 in SWJCFC action, are coming off a 34-27 loss in Miami, Okla., against NEO. Blinn (4-0, 2-0) rolled to an 84-12 non-conference win against Rezolution Prep in its last outing.
