9-17-18: Sports Notes

VOLLEYBALL

The seventh-ranked Lady Cardinals cruised to a 4-0 record in the North Central Texas College Invitational Tournament over the weekend.

The Lady Cardinals defeated Wharton (3-0), Victoria (3-1), NCTC (3-0) and Brookhaven (3-0) to run their record to 14-1.

Sophomores Juliana Vaz and Audry Lopez were named all-tournament.

Next up for the Lady Cardinals is a showdown Wednesday in Tyler against fifth-ranked Tyler. Game time at Wagstaff Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to be at home at the Athens High School sports arena on Friday against Ranger at 4 p.m.

FOOTBALL

The Cardinals dropped a 34-27 decision on the road Saturday night to No. 4 NEO.

The Cardinals spotted NEO a 20-0 lead before rallying to make a game of it with a chance to tie in the closing seconds.

The loss saw the Cardinals slip to 1-3 on the year and 1-2 in conference.

The Cardinals are scheduled to be at home Saturday against No. 6 Blinn. Game time at Bruce Field is 7 p.m.

CARDINAL GYM

Work continues to bring a new look to Cardinal Gym.

The framing for the seating on the north and south sides is completed. Bleacher seating for the student section on the west end in front of the new storage area should begin being added today. Expect the red theater seating on the north and south sides to begin making an appearance this week.

Also, 20 additional lights are being installed on the beams above the court.

The target date for completion remains Oct. 1.
