8-23-18: Sports Notes

VOLLEYBALL

The 19th-ranked Lady Cardinals dispatched of the 20th-ranked Blinn College Lady Buccaneers in 3-0 fashion Wednesday night in season-opening action at the beautiful, spacious Athens High School sports arena, winning 25-16, 25-17, 25-15 in a non-conference match that took 1:01 to complete.

In ushering in the ninth season of Lady Cardinal volleyball, Coach Tosha Spain's squad opened with a win for a third straight season and the fifth time in school history.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to take to the road today for Midland, where they will compete Friday-Saturday in the annual Midland Classic. The Lady Cardinals play host Midland at noon Friday and then take on Western Texas at 4 p.m. Saturday, the Lady Cardinals play Ranger at 8 a.m. and then face Blinn in a rematch at 10 a.m.

Against Blinn, the Lady Cardinals were in complete control, trailing just briefly twice during the match.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to be at home again (at AHS sports arena) against next Monday against Temple. Action begins at 6 p.m.

 

FOOTBALL

State pride will be on the line Saturday in the Battle In The Valley at Bruce Field. It will be the seventh-ranked Cardinals against the fourth-ranked Snow College (Utah) Badgers in a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The game is sponsored by Virtual Communication Specialists.

The Cardinals are coming off a 9-3 season, which culminated with a dramatic, come-from-behind win against defending national champion Garden City Community College in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl in December. Snow was 10-1 last year.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams.

Next week the Cardinals are scheduled to open SWJCFC play on the road against New Mexico Military Institute. They return home in two weeks on Saturday, Sept. 8, to host Tyler Junior College at 7 p.m.

CARDINAL GYM

The new-look Cardinal Gym is still on schedule to be back in business by Monday, Oct. 1.

The college received word earlier this week delivery of the new seating for the facility will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Additional deliveries are scheduled Wednesday, Sept. 5 and Wednesday, Sept. 12.

Also among the improvements will be the addition of three new scorer's/media tables, which will feature a video board.
