FORE, PLEASE: Club golf makes debut at college

Golf has returned to Trinity Valley Community College in club form.

Competing in its first NextGen Golf event, the TVCC golf club made the trip to Marble Falls for the first tournament of the season Saturday-Sunday at the challenging and beautiful Ram Rock Course at Horseshoe Bay.

TVCC was the lone community college competing in the event, which featured 90 players. College/universities represented were Texas, Baylor, SMU, Texas State, Houston Baptist, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, TCU, Abilene Christian, UTSA and Golf Academy of America.

TVCC was represented by sophomore Jordan Jump (Mabank), sophomore Jake Kinzer (Athens), freshman Chris Holstrom (Canton) and freshman Mark Parnell (Athens).

"The first golf tournament was a weekend I won't forget," Jump said. "The course was hard but the team I'm on made it worth it.

"I love playing golf and even more playing golf with people I enjoy being with. I wouldn't have wanted to spend my weekend any other way."

TVCC is among 350 colleges/universities competing in NextGen Golf in the spring season. In all, more than 10,000 golfers will compete.

"Playing Bam Rock was an experience like no other," Parnell said. "The course challenged my game in ways I would never have imagined. It was definitely a sight to see and I look forward to see what Bear Creek has to offer next month."

In NextGen Golf events, each team consists of  5-8 players. Any colleges can have up to four teams (two men's and two women's). Teams are coed unless a school has a separate men's and women's team. If a college cannot field a team of at least five players, individual students can compete representing the school.

"Being a part of the TVCC golf club has allowed me to play and compete on one of the best course in the state, not to mention one of the toughest," Kinzer said. "It's provided me the opportunity to meet students on campus who have similar interests and also students from across the state whose friendships could play a valuable part in my future."

"Thanks to Coach Blake (Williamson) and Dr. (Jay) Kinzer for putting this together," Holstrom said. "I had an amazing time this weekend in Marble Falls."

Next up for TVCC is a tournament March 25-26 at Bear Creek Golf Club in Dallas.
